trick or treat?

Halloween is just around the corner, and you know what that means – sugary treats for all of us ghouls and goblins.  But is the trick on us?

Sugary foods rob us of our otherworldly superpowers.

Here’s how:

Sugar displaces other healthier foods.

When we choose sweet treats instead of foods that are nutrient dense,  our overall nutrition suffers. Replacing sweets with nutritious foods like  fruits and vegetables increases the impact that the wonderful phytonutrients and antioxidants in fruits and vegetables can offer us.

Sugar suppresses the immune system.

When you chomp down on some candy corn, you temporarily suppress your immune system.   The effect lasts for several hours, so if you eat sweets several times a day, your immune system may be perpetually operating at a distinct disadvantage.

Sugar promotes inflammation.

Inflammation, which is a protective attempt by the body to remove injurious stimuli and to initiate the healing process, is not always a bad thing. But eating sugary foods every day, throughout the day, can fuel an excessive and inappropriate inflammatory response in the body  promotes aging and disease.

Sugar raises insulin levels.

Nibbling on ghoulish treats will increase our blood sugar levels.   In response, the pancreas will release insulin to help get rid of that sugar load.  As blood sugar levels decrease, insulin levels normalize.  But when we eat sugary and refined foods constantly, we are overworking and stressing the pancreas increasing our risk of insulin-resistance, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes.

This Halloween, consider handing out the following sweet treats – they are healthier than most and non-GMO:
